Advocacy Work and Social Due Process

Advocacy Plan

We have an advocacy plan for the next several years:

The Social Due Process Project advocates for laws and policies that better protect individuals and society, including the expansion of revenge porn laws, anti-defamation laws, anti-doxing laws, and anti-bullying policies, as well as changes in practices used within news media policies.  This advocacy and legal work looks to develop a balance between protecting free speech rights and social due process,

As the Social Due Process Project moves into a future phase of our work, we will begin advocacy work for legal and policy changes that advance our principles and framework.

For example, we plan advocacy work at the state and local levels for,

  1. School curriculum and policies that educate students about social due process, with a focus on the ethical use of social media, combating interpersonal gossip, and reducing bullying.
  2. Expansion of privacy laws at the state and local level, including revenge porn and other privacy laws.  We will advocate for a reasonable expectation of privacy over pictures, videos, texts, and messages.  Just as many states limit publicly posting sexual pictures of others (e.g. revenge porn) and ban secret recordings of conversations, we advocate that texts and other app messages should also be assumed private.  We also suggest states expand anti-doxing laws to limit people from inappropriately harassing and endangering people via inappropriate social media use. We think it is especially important to protect people from being doxed for simply having opposing political views. Some on the left and right have inappropriately used doxing to "cancel" people with whom they disagree on complex political issues.
